Anthropic Expands Cowork: Department-Specific AI Agents Move Deeper into the Enterprise

Anthropic has rolled out a major upgrade to its Cowork agent platform, introducing department specific AI agents, private plugin stores, and deep integrations with tools like Gmail and DocuSign. The move intensifies the enterprise agent race with OpenAI’s Frontier initiatives.

New prebuilt agents now support ten departments from launch, including HR, engineering, banking, equity research, and wealth management. The platform also adds connectors for Google Workspace, DocuSign, FactSet, and Harvey, alongside partner plugins from Slack, Salesforce, S and P Global, and LSEG.

Organizations can now create private agent stores and deploy custom AI agents to selected teams with granular admin controls for access and governance. A new research preview also enables Claude to move between Excel and PowerPoint, analysing data in one and automatically generating a complete presentation in the other.

Why important?

The significance is strategic. Cowork unsettled SaaS markets when it first appeared as a research preview. Now it arrives with functional agents across ten departments and integrations with the tools those teams already rely on. With each update, Anthropic is expanding into another professional domain. If this pace continues, much of the knowledge economy may begin to operate through a Claude centred layer.
