US limits use of Anthropic AI models Fable 5 and Mythos

AI geopolitics takes another dramatic turn.

Anthropic has suspended global access to its newest AI models, Mythos and Fable 5, following a U.S. export control directive requiring restrictions on access by foreign nationals, including those located within the United States.

According to reports, concerns centred around a potential security vulnerability and the possibility that a China linked group may have gained access to Mythos, although the details remain unclear.

Anthropic pushed back on the severity of the issue, stating it had received only “verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non universal jailbreak” and argued that similar vulnerabilities exist across frontier AI systems, including GPT 5.5.

The company stated:
“As we have stated publicly, we believe the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a statutory process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts. This action does not adhere to those principles.”

Why important?

This is a major moment in the evolution of AI governance, national security and technology competition. The debate is no longer just about who builds the most powerful AI systems, but who controls access to them, how they are regulated and which nations can benefit from their capabilities.

As AI becomes a strategic asset similar to energy, semiconductors and critical infrastructure, these decisions could reshape the global AI landscape and accelerate discussions around digital sovereignty and independent AI capabilities.
