London Named OpenAI’s Largest Research Hub Outside the US as UK Doubles Down on AI Leadership and Safety

OpenAI has announced that London will become its largest research hub outside the United States, marking a significant expansion of its presence in the United Kingdom, according to Reuters.
 
The company said it selected Britain because of “Britain’s technology ecosystem as an ideal environment to invest in and develop new artificial intelligence systems.”
 
Mark Chen, OpenAI’s research chief, emphasized the country’s strategic advantages, stating that the UK’s “mix of talent, leading universities and globally respected scientific institutions gives it leverage in a sector governments worldwide view as strategically important.”
 
The expansion comes alongside deeper collaboration with the UK government on AI safety. OpenAI and Microsoft have pledged new funding to the UK’s AI Security Institute Alignment Project, committing £5.6 million from OpenAI as part of more than £27 million now backing around 60 research projects across eight countries. The initiative focuses on AI alignment, defined as ensuring advanced systems “work as they’re supposed to” and avoid harmful or unintended behaviour.
 
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said, “AI offers us huge opportunities, but we will always be clear-eyed on the need to ensure safety is baked into it from the outset.” AI Minister Kanishka Narayan added, “We can only unlock the full power of AI if people trust it… alignment research tackles this head-on.” OpenAI’s Mia Glaese noted that “the hardest problems won’t be solved by any one organisation working in isolation,” emphasizing the need for independent research teams.
