On This Day… 1776 | January 1: The Flag

Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s AI venture, Primordial Soup, has released On This Day… 1776, a short-form series that recreates moments from the American Revolution using Google DeepMind technology. Each episode is released on the 250th anniversary of the historical event it portrays.

The series blends AI-generated visuals with performances from SAG-AFTRA voice actors, framing the project as an artist-led use of AI rather than a fully automated production. Episodes are published on TIME’s YouTube channel, aligning each release with the corresponding historical anniversary.

The project follows Aronofsky’s partnership with DeepMind, announced in May, focused on exploring AI-driven storytelling. That collaboration previously resulted in ANCESTRA, a Veo-assisted film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.

Why important?

AI video tools are moving deeper into professional studio workflows. What began as experimental shorts or limited visual effects is evolving into end-to-end visual production. While broad industry acceptance is still emerging, attitudes are shifting, and Hollywood’s approach to AI is becoming more deliberate and clearly defined. However, concerns about long-term job impacts remain, alongside unresolved questions around intellectual property and copyright, particularly regarding the use of actors’ voices, likenesses, and creative rights.
